Eight years of notable success as a legislator enable Marty to bring a special level of knowledge and expertise to public affairs work. Known for effective advocacy, she gets results in state and municipal government. Marty's creative yet realistic solutions result from her abilities as an attorney, strategic thinker, and effective communicator.

During Marty’s eight years in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, she served as Chair of the Education Committee and as Assistant Vice-Chair of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. With her in-depth knowledge, strong credibility in state and municipal government, and exceptional advocacy and communication skills, she provides policy counsel and strategic advice to business leaders, trade association executives, and nonprofit organizations.

Her work includes:

Assessing needs and available solutions and providing long or short term strategies.
Drafting, analyzing, and monitoring legislation pending in the state legislature and in municipal governments across the state.
Creating and sustaining coalitions in order to build consensus for a proposal and drive public policy, including community relations and grassroots organizing.
Designing and implementing communications strategies, including working with the media, to influence key stakeholders and public opinion.

An Effective Advocate on Beacon Hill

Marty represented the 8th Suffolk District as a Massachusetts State Representative for eight years. While in the House of Representatives, Marty held numerous leadership positions, including Assistant Vice-Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, House Chair of the Education Committee, Vice-Chair of the House Ethics Committee, and Co-Chair of the Caucus of Women Legislators.

A Deeply Experienced Nonprofit Leader

Marty has unparalleled nonprofit sector experience, from successful senior leadership positions to dedicated service on numerous boards of directors and advisory councils. She is a sought-after interim leader for organizations needing a steady hand during times of transition.

Women's Health Expert

Marty served as the Chief Executive Officer of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, a $19 million organization serving 30,000 patients annually at seven health centers and reaching more than 50,000 students, parents, and teaching professionals each year through its education programs.

Legal Expertise

Marty is a seasoned employment attorney, having practiced law at the national law firm Littler Mendelson and at the venerable Boston law firm Palmer & Dodge. She also worked as Associate General Counsel for Harcourt General, Inc., where she managed labor and employment law matters for a publishing, entertainment, and retail company with $4.5 billion in revenue and 40,000 employees globally.

Education

Marty holds a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government, where she was a Kennedy Fellow and a Lucius N. Littaur Fellow. Marty also has a J.D. from New York University School of Law and a B.A. from Colgate University, from which she graduated magna cum laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
