The Massachusetts Teachers Association Endorses Marty Walz

The Massachusetts Teachers Association has endorsed Marty Walz for State Representative in the 8th Suffolk District, the seat currently held by Representative Paul Demakis.

“We need to make sure that we elect people to serve in the legislature who share our goals for educational achievement, and Marty’s commitment to work for better public school funding demonstrates to us that she will be a powerful advocate for education and an outstanding State Representative,” said MTA President Catherine Boudreau.

“As the daughter and granddaughter of teachers, I am honored to have the MTA’s support,” Walz said.

“I understand that the state must provide adequate resources so children receive the high quality education they deserve. I also know that local residents will pay higher property taxes if the state doesn’t meet its funding obligations to our schools. Unlike my opponent who wants to reduce state spending, I will be fiscally responsible with our tax dollars as I make education a priority,” she concluded.

Marty Walz is Vice President of Development at Jumpstart, a nonprofit serving at-risk preschoolers. Previously, she has worked for Boston Public Schools and as an attorney in private practice.

Walz also has a long record of community service, including as President of the Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay. Marty is a board member of The Women’s Lunch Place, a daytime shelter for poor and homeless women, and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, an organization dedicated to protecting women’s reproductive freedom.

Walz received 73% of the vote in the Democratic primary election, winning every precinct. She faces a Republican in the general election on November 2.
