Public Safety

Marty believes Massachusetts should have the most stringent gun control laws possible. She supports legislation to limit the number of firearms an individual in the Commonwealth can purchase in any given 30-day period.

Marty joined with her colleagues in the House of Representatives and the Senate to approve CORI reform legislation that will help people get back to work, reduce recidivism rates, ensure taxpayer dollars are spent more wisely, and make access to criminal records fairer and more effective. The new law increases access to criminal background checks while ensuring, where appropriate, that records are not arbitrarily used to deny employment opportunities. Information on all convictions for sex offenses, murder and manslaughter remain available for life and law enforcement will continue to have full access to CORI.

To make our roads safer, Marty fought for legislation establishing the Bicyclists’ Bill of Rights, which makes clear the responsibilities of both cyclists and drivers on our roads. She also supported the Slow Down, Move Over law to keep law enforcement professionals safe on our highways, and she is a co-sponsor of legislation that will reduce speed limits in thickly settled residential districts and urban areas.

Marty voted for legislation providing for improved safety for All-Terrain Vehicle Users. This comprehensive ATV legislation will protect our environmental resources as well as enhance public safety.

To update our laws for the digital age, Marty voted to make it illegal to send lewd electronic messages to minors.

Marty knows that victims of sexual assault and stalking need all the support we can provide, so she co-sponsored the new law that expands access to restraining orders.

Marty has consistently voted against bills seeking to re-establish the death penalty.
